Health & Safety in the Construction Industry

Here at Prime Design Project, health and safety is our priority. The construction industry can be very dangerous. In fact, it was named the industry with the highest number of deaths at work coming in at a total of 30 deaths in 2022.This industry has also made up one quarter of the fatal at-work injuries in 2022, beating industries such as transportation and manufacturing. Annually there are approximately 60,000 injuries reported in the construction sector in the UK, a quarter of these caused by accidents such as trips, falls and slips.

Shockingly, we are still regularly exposed to poorly managed site safety systems, where a good safety record is largely a question of luck. We do not rely on luck and good fortune to determine our safety performance, we implement and carefully manage safety systems to keep all those involved in our projects safe. We are not always popular at a project outset as the safe way may not be the quickest way, but our primary aim is not popularity. Delivering any capital projects increases potential safety risks as, by their nature, they are out of the ordinary. We offer a range of services to help successfully manage project safety.

Health and Safety Audits and Assessments:

We carry out one-off assessments and ongoing programmes of inspections on projects. This allows us to immediately highlight issues to any parties involved in the projects to give you peace of mind. We will provide you with a written inspection report to make the health and safety process more convenient for you.

CDM (Construction Design and Management):

This is a mandatory documented process for managing any high risk projects (HSE notifiable). Prime Design Projects can act as a CDM Principal Contractor or a CDM Principal Designer on your project. We are also available to provide advice and guidance regarding CDM when necessary.

Site Management:

Prime Design are able to provide experienced site managers that will take control of your project’s worksite. Some of the responsibilities these managers will take on include reviewing & approving RAMs, coordinating daily activities, issuing and monitoring permits, contractor management, carrying out toolbox talks and assessing the workplace standards. They will also formally report and investigate any safety issues and risks that are noticed at the worksite. This function will be undertaken by the Principal Contractor mentioned previously if this is done under CDM.

Control of Contractors:

We utilise Salutis software to successfully manage contractors. Whether the specific requirement is for a single project or for ongoing support across a number of projects the arrangement is the same. We monitor contracting companies; status, insurance provision and safety record as well as individual personnel competencies and permits to work.

For any questions or queries regarding health and safety at Prime Design Projects, please don’t hesitate to contact us and we will be happy to help out.
